Patient Rights and Responsibilities


MHHS wants you to have the best possible care, as prescribed or recommended by those who are treating you. We want you to know what your rights are as a patient, as well as what your obligations are to yourself, your physician and MHHS. We encourage you or those who represent you to talk openly with those involved with your care.

Patients have the right to equal access to the medical services, treatment, or accommodations offered by MHHS, regardless of their age, religion, color, race, creed, gender, national origin, disability, or sources of payment for care. Patients will not be denied such services or benefits, nor will they receive different or separate treatment, based on their age, religion, color, race, creed, gender, national origin, disability, or sources of payment for care.

You have the right to:

  • Reasonable access to care.
  • Considerate and respectful care and to request information about the professional status and identity of individuals caring for you.
  • Security and to receive care in a safe setting including freedom from verbal or physical abuse or harassment and the ability to access protective services.
  • Be free from the use of seclusion or restraint, of any form, as a means of coercion, discipline, convenience, or retaliation by staff.
  • Exercise your rights with regard to care including advance directives, such as a living will or durable healthcare power of attorney.
  • Privacy and confidentiality. The hospital, your doctor, and others caring for you will protect your privacy and confidentiality, including your medical records, as much as possible unless you have given permission to release the information. You have the right to refuse to talk with or see anyone not officially connected with the hospital, as well as those officially connected with the hospital.
  • Register a complaint without it jeopardizing future care.
  • Express spiritual beliefs and cultural practices as long as they do not interfere with diagnostic procedures or treatment.
  • Hear from your physician, in language you can understand, information about your diagnosis, treatment plan, and prognosis; the risks, benefits, and alternatives of any procedures or treatments; and instructions for follow-up care. You have the right to make decisions about care and to participate in the development and implementation of your treatment plan, including managing your pain effectively.
  • Refuse treatment and to be informed of the medical consequences of this action. You have the right to change your mind about any procedure for which you have given consent.
  • Examine your medical bill and medical record and to receive an explanation of charges or care unless restricted by law.

Access or restrict communications from outside the hospital.

  • Have your chosen representative to exercise these rights for you, if you are unable to do so.
  • Consent or decline to take part in research affecting your care.

You, in turn, have the responsibility to:

  • Provide accurate and complete information about present complaints, past illnesses, hospitalizations, medications and all other matters relating to your health.
  • Report unexpected changes in your condition to your physician and nurse.
  • Notify your physician or nurse if you do not understand your diagnosis,treatment, prognosis, or what is expected of you.
  • Give cooperation and follow the treatment plan recommended by your physician, nurse or allies health personnel.
  • Assume the consequence if you refuse treatment or do not follow your practitioner’s instructions.
  • Accept financial obligations associated with your care.
  • Know and follow hospital rules and regulations.
  • Be considerate of the rights of other patients and hospital personnel and to assist in the control of noise, smoking and the number of visitors you receive.
  • Advise your physician and/or nurse of any dissatisfaction you may have regarding your care.
