Morristown-Hamblen Healthcare System hosts educational conference on vascular disoders & services Recently, Morristown-Hamblen Healthcare System held an educational conference on vascular disease. The conference focused on diagnostic and treatment options now available to our community at the Heart, Lung & Vascular Center located in the new Northeast Tower of Morristown-Hamblen Healthcare System. Speakers included Dr. Assandia, the Medical Director for Vascular Services at MHHS, as well as Knoxville based physicians Dr. Stevens and Dr. Freeman. Vascular disease is very common and many people may not even know that they have the disease because it rarely causes symptoms in early stages. Untreated vascular disease can lead to serious health problems, such as stroke and pulmonary embolism where a blood clot can break loose and travel to the heart and lungs. According to Tommy Bain, Director of the Heart, Lung and Vascular Center at MHHS, "Vascular disease affects 10 million people in the United States including 5% of the over-50 population." Dr. Assandia explained that Abdominal Aortic Aneurysms (AAA), a vascular disorder, is the 13th leading cause of death, and that an AAA ruptures has greater than a 90% rate of mortality. He also explained that the non invasive B Mode Ultrasound and CT scans are very effective diagnostic tools and if intervention is necessary to correct the problem, the Vascular Services team at MHHS is well equipped to perform endovascular repairs. Endovascular repairs are less invasive and have demonstrated improved outcomes, and patient comfort, as compared to conventional repairs. "We are committed to educate people about vascular disease and provide the technologies for state-of-the-art diagnostic and treatment options like the new Phillips Allura Xper FD20 Cath Labs," said Richard L. Clark, Administrator/CEO. The newly consolidated Heart, Lung & Vascular Center boasts innovative CardioVascular capabilities. The new Phillips Allura Xper FD20 Cath Labs provide area physicians comprehensive CardioVascular imaging for diagnostic and interventional procedures, and is designed to ensure optimal patient safety and comfort.
