Morristown-Hamblen Healthcare System really 'pampers' newborns

Morristown-Hamblen Healthcare System is probably best known for bringing the latest technologies and services to the Lakeway area, but there has always been a soft touch behind even those 'high tech' initiatives.

This latest caring effort demonstrates the passion MHHS has for the patients, especially newborns. Beginning this fall, the Women's and Children's Center of Morristown-Hamblen Healthcare System will be providing a new service- Infant Massage.

According to Lindsey Dawson, Certified Infant Massage Instructor, "infant massage has been practiced by other cultures for centuries and in the United States since the 1970's." The tender strokes of massage have very positive effects on infants, reducing tension and irritability. The baby becomes more relaxed and usually enjoys longer and sounder sleep. The massage therapy enhances bonding as it communicates a message of love and security, while helping parents become more aware of their baby's nonverbal cues.

Research conducted in various institutes since the 1970's demonstrate many benefits of infant massage included weight gain, neurological development, decreased hospitalization, and even improved digestion.

"There are many benefits of Infant Massage, and the babies really enjoy it. We love our babies here at Morristown Hamblen, and this is just another way to show it," said Dedra Anderson, Senior Associate Administrator.

Classes will be held twice a month and will begin in September on the 22nd and 29th. A Fee of $40.00 per session will be required with a maximum of only (4) infants per class. Sessions include (2) classes. For more information and/or to reserve a class, call Lindsey Dawson at (423) 312-2639.
