Physician Profile: Dr. Bill Black How many 5-year-olds announce they are going to be a doctor, one who delivers babies no less, and actually becomes an obstetrician? Not many, most likely. But that's exactly what Bill Black did. "The whole time I was growing up I never lost sight of the fact that I wanted to be a doctor and deliver babies," said Dr. Black, an obstetrician/gynecologist with East TN OB/GYN and on staff at Morristown-Hamblen Healthcare System. "I even quit a job that paid well to go to work for minimum wage in a nursing home to see if I liked medicine." "I sort of worked my way up from there. I started out as a nurse's aid in the nursing home and later in a hospital. Then I worked as a phlebotomist in a hospital, and a unit secretary, and finally as an EKG tech before going to college." Dr. Black was born in Fort Worth, Texas, and attended the University of Texas, earning a bachelor's degree in biology. He attended medical school at the University of Texas at San Antonio then moved east to complete internship and residency at the University of Tennessee Medical Center in Knoxville. He practiced in Kentucky, before joining East Tennessee OB/GYN about six months ago. "We have such a great team of OB/GYN specialists and Dr. Black was the perfect addition," stated Dawn Poythress, Director, MHHS Women's Center. "Dr. Black is very proficient in obstetrics and in women's health. He is a skilled surgeon and at the same time understands the physical and mental needs of his patients," added Poythress. "More and more women understand that our medical staff is among the best in East Tennessee and there is no need to drive to a larger city to receive excellent care from a physician or a hospital," stated Dedra Anderson, CNO / Vice-President MHHS. Morristown-Hamblen offers a secure Women's Center with seven Labor and Delivery Suites complete with advanced Perinatal Monitoring System and specialty skilled nurses and staff trained to meet all the needs of an expectant mother. The Women's Center has an additional 10 private post-partum suites, and 3 private rooms for gynecology and other non-infectious female patients, so they can also enjoy the updated atmosphere of the Women's Center. A new feature all patients at MHHS are enjoying is the "At Your Request" Meal Service, which allows patients to order from a menu at any time of day. The babies have their own little wing in the Women's Center with nurses and staff specialized to meet all their new needs. The nursery is comfortable and cozy for the little ones visits but is equipped with all the life-saving technology essential to save a little life in trouble. Morristown has seemed to be a perfect fit for Dr. Black. "The staff at MHHS is great, they are caring professionals that go above and beyond to ensure the patients' needs are met," said Dr. Black. "They are very knowledgeable and just a great bunch of nurses," added Dr. Black. "The technology at MHHS is great as well. They have invested a lot into OB and Surgery equipment and always welcome physicians input on ways to improve. It has been a pleasure for me to get to know the staff at East TN OB/GYN and MHHS and to work with them," added Dr. Black. "Morristown is a great community to live and to work in and I am glad to call it home." Dr. Black enjoys spending his free time golfing, hiking and spending time with his wife, Melanie and his 3 children, Scott, Lauren and Madison. He is accepting new patients.
